WELCOME TO BERHAMPORE COLLEGE
BERHAMPORE COLLEGE (so re-named in 1975) was established (2nd august,1963) initially as Raja Krishnath College of Commerce to cater Commerce Education to the Students of Murshidabad in particular and the Students of adjoining districts in general. In 1971, the then college authority felt that Arts Stream was to be introduced to cope with the increasing demands of the students(who were mostly first generation learners) as well as the guardians. As a result some Arts subjects were introduced with necessary approval from the University of Calcutta and the Government of West Bengal. At first only pass subjects of Arts were approved. The introduction of Arts ushered in a new era in the history of development of the College. From then on Berhampore College started functioning as a full fledged college for Arts and Commerce.
But the College would not have been set up at all had there been no concerted efforts of the renowned Educationists like Dr. Ram Chandra Pal (the then Principal of Krishnath College),Late Promatha Nath Sengupta and other eminent personalities of Berhampore. Late Promatha Nath Sengupta shouldered the sole responsibility of the new born college in the capacity of its first Principal. It was Late Sengupta who, by his unflinching industry nursed and guided the college to flourish into an institution of repute. In his struggle he got full-support- financial and moral from every education-loving people. The then teachers, staff and the students, too, had their share in the development of the college.
When the college started its journey it had no building of its own. Classes were usually held in the premises of Krishnath College in the evening. But thanks to all-out efforts of all, the college was shifted to its present site in 1970.It is adjacent to Berhampore court road railway station and Berhampore bus stand. A vast open in the form of stadium infront of the college adds the scenic beauty to the college. As mentioned earlier, the college in 1971 started teaching in Arts subjects(Pass). Eventually Honours in Bengali, English, Philosophy, History, Political Science, Economics, Mathematics and Geography were approved by the affiliating University and the Govt. of West Bengal. At present Film Studies(only of its kind under the University of Kalyani) and Geography as Pass subjects are being taught at the Degree level. Recently the College has been successful in introducing Honours in Sanskrit (self financing) and Geography with approval from the University of Kalyani and the Govt. of West Bengal.
The College Authority does not consider its duty done having only the traditional subjects of study. It is on the look out for opening up current subjects to meet the needs of the hour. At present more or less 5,000 students are being provided with the scope for higher education at this Seat of Learning.
Despite constraints of various sorts, the college does not restrict its activities only in impacting syllabi-based education to the students. Its target is to produce worthy members of the society. For this, the college authority always keeps a vigilant look into the all round growth and development of its students. Its cherished dream is to produce citizens who will be physically fit minds without fear and heads held high. To translate its dream into reality the college authority has setup a multi-gym with financial assistance from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Govt. of India, it will be beneficial to the students. Moreover the N.S.S. Wing of the college are engaged in variou s co-curricular activities which instill in the students a sense of responsibility and feeling for others .Along with these ,the college authority in collaboration with the students union organises on regular basis debates, seminars, symposia, sports and other cultural functions for the development of the students. The sportsmen among the students get impetus from the college. The college football and cricket team have made their marks in the field of games and sports in west Bengal. The NAAC peer team highly appreciated the over-all performances of the college and accredited the college in the status “B” in 2007.
Ours is a striving for excellence and we are striding with firm steps towards our goal. Success will surely be ours as there is mutual understanding among the college authority, the teachers, the non teaching staff and the students of the college.
